incompatible character encodings: ASCII-8BIT and UTF-8 in Ruby 1.9.2

While migrating from Ruby 1.8.7 to Ruby 1.9.2 getting error:
incompatible character encodings: ASCII-8BIT and UTF-8 in Ruby 1.9.2

While running rake task, getting error:

At some other places getting error :
invalid multibyte char (US-ASCII)


Solution:
Solved it by following steps:
  • Make sure 'config.encoding = "utf-8"' is there in application.rb file.
  • Make sure you are using 'mysql2' gem
  • Putting '# encoding: utf-8' on top of rake file.
  • Above 'Starter::Application.initialize!' line in environment.rb file, add following two lines:
Encoding.default_external = Encoding::UTF_8
Encoding.default_internal = Encoding::UTF_8
